Evorel Sequi is a hormone replacement therapy preparation. Two types of patches are included in this treatment: Evorel 50 patches, which contain estradiol hemihydrate and norethisterone acetate. These are forms of the main female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone.
On the road leading to menopause, women ovaries start to produce less and less oestrogen and this causes oestrogen levels to decline as a result. Deteriorating levels of oestrogen can cause distressing symptoms, such as irregular periods, hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and vaginal dryness or itching.
Estradiol hemihydrate can be given as a supplement to replace the declining levels of oestrogen in the body and help to make the distressing symptom of menopause more tolerable. This is known as Hormone Replacement Therapy. Hormone Replacement Therapy should be reviewed once a year by your doctor and is usually only required for a short-term relief from menopausal symptoms.
Evorel Sequi is applied to the skin and therefore doesn’t have to be taken orally, reducing the risk of side effects. Evorel Sequi is a continuous HRT treatment that contains both estradiol and norethisterone acetate. The estradiol in this treatment is intended to replace oestrogen lost as a result of menopause, while norethisterone acetate - a type of progestogen - works to ensure that the womb remains healthy during treatment in women who have not had a hysterectomy.
The effects of these hormones help to treat symptoms such as vaginal dryness, vaginal itching, mood swings and hot flushes.
Evorel Sequi is a combination pack, consisting of the two types of patches Evorel Conti and Evorel. Evorel consists of estradiol only and Evorel Conti contains both estradiol and norethisterone acetate. Estradiol helps to replenish natural oestrogen levels, while progestogen helps with womb health. Progestogen only forms part of the treatment during the last two weeks of your cycle; to ensure that hormonal fluctuation patterns aren’t too far removed from what they would normally be.
Evorel Sequi patches are intended to be used by women between the ages of 40 and 60 who are experiencing menopause symptoms and who haven’t had their womb surgically removed. You may not have been recommended this medication if you are allergic to the ingredients found in these treatments. Similarly you should also not use this medication if you have a history of breast cancer, cancer of the womb, unexplained vaginal bleeding, fibroids in the womb, blood clots, heart attack, blood disorders (porphyrias), angina or liver disease, or if you are are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The patch should be placed on skin that is clean and dry straight after it has been unwrapped. Evorel Sequi is a sequential combined HRT and so an Evorel 50 patch (consisting of oestrogen) is applied twice weekly for two weeks, with the Evorel Conti patch (oestrogen and progestogen) used on the 15th day and changed twice during the next two weeks.
